The Lucy Cow

When I was pregnant with Lucy we happened to buy a few heifers. We decided it would be a prudent time to set aside a cow for our bun in the oven… she could start making some money on her calves even before she herself emerged from the womb.
The heifers were all black except one red baldy. Buck’s Grandpa had bright red hair and we knew Lucy could potentially get the red gene so we decided the red baldy was the perfect fit. (Little did we know, the baldy part would end up being more fitting than the red!)
Some children are born into affluence; Lucy was born owning a cow, a “cash- cow” if you will. Seeing as Lucy wasn’t born with any actual cash in hand (although that would have been nice) and we, her parents didn’t want to be ”giving handouts” right from the get-go, we allowed her to finance the cow through us. The first two years of her life, she actually spent paying her earnings back to us. It was either that or we, her faithful financial backers, didn’t bother to get Lucy’s “ranch account” set up for awhile and the money got, well, spent.
At any rate, Lucy knows about what we lovingly call “The Lucy Cow”… she can pick her out of the herd and says things like “she’s a wed white face”. It’s pretty cute to hear words like that coming out of our three year old’s mouth. We keep her in the pasture closest to the house and can often see her from the car window when we pull in the driveway, if not from the dining room window.
Buck and Uncle Todd both make a point to keep an eye on The Lucy Cow and take note when she’s getting close to calving. For several days last week, Buck mentioned that the time was drawing near. One day he noticed when she didn’t come in with the rest of the herd for breakfast and Red Baldy had wandered off to the far end of the pasture by herself. After a break for lunch Buck invited Lucy (as in the human one) to go check cows with him. He doesn’t exactly have to twist her arm to go on such adventures and in no time at all she had her snow clothes on and was heading out to check cows with her dad.
With Kate already down for a nap, I was savoring the solitude. A cup of tea in one hand, toys all over the floor, dishes piled high in the sink, and a good book beckoning me, I took advantage of the opportunity. The nano-second I snuggled into a comfy chair the phone rang. I jumped up willing the ring not to wake my sleeping babe and answered through gritted teeth in the univeral “I have a sleeping child” mom voice, “Hello?” The other end was quiet for a second until I heard “the wucy cow had her calf mama!” To which I replied “How great!” To which my Lucy responded “Yea, its so eh-citing!” To which I replied ”That is exciting!” To which Lucy responded “How are you doing mama?” To which I laughed and asked her what color her calf was. She handed the phone to her daddy while saying “See ya waiter… I wuv you”.
And so it was. The Lucy Cow has had another calf and I only felt it right for you to know about it. It’s a black heifer calf which is information Lucy knows and likes repeating. The world should know that ”The Wucy Cow had a bwack heifer calf!”
